How a Modern Menu Should Work

The following is a much-abbreviated set of recommendations for how keyboard shortcuts should work to control menu behavior, according to the Dynamic HTML Style Guide.

  • Tab enters and exits the menu
  • Navigate with left/right arrow keys
  • Open sub-menu with enter, space bar, or up/down arrows
  • Navigate sub-menus with arrow keys
  • Exit sub-menu with escape
