Accommodations for a lab may include the following:

  • Take the student on a tour of the lab he will be working in. Discuss safety concerns.
  • Assign group lab projects in which all students contribute according to their abilities.
  • Arrange lab equipment so that it is easily accessible.
  • Give oral and written lab instructions.

For suggestions for making science labs accessible to students with a variety of disabilities, consult the DO-IT publication Making Science Labs Accessible to Students with Disabilities and Accessibility in the Laboratory, published by the American Chemical Society.

For views of students with disabilities regarding how they can best be accommodated in order to gain and demonstrate knowledge and fully participate in science classes, consult Working Together: Science Teachers and Students with Disabilities or view the video by the same title.

For specific guidelines for developing an accessible science or math class, consult The Winning Equation: Access + Attitude = Success in Math and Science or view the video by the same title.
