Scholar Awards and Achievements

DO-IT Scholars have had some impressive achievements since the program began in 1993. Here are just a few.

  • Teresa, ‘16 Scholar, was featured in the 2020 Western Athletic Championship, accepted into a study abroad program, rehired as a resident assistant, and won the 2020-2021 Naef Scholarship.
  • Ryan, ‘09 Scholar, in May 2020, performed as timpanist in the pit for Don Pasquale with Pacific Northwest Opera in Mt. Vernon with a conductor from the New York Metropolitan Opera. He also recently won an audition with the Helena Symphony Orchestra.
  • Isabel Hammett, ‘18 Scholar, made All-Olympic League 1A Division volleyball and basketball teams in 2020.
  • Brookelyn Rhodes, ‘15 Scholar, won Reserve Grand Champion with two Dexter cattle at the 2020 Washington State Fair.
  • Jesse Anderson, ‘95 Scholar, served on the Low Vision Advisory Board for Microsoft, which assists in helping make Microsoft products like Windows, Office, and Xbox more accessible in 2020.
  • Katelyn Temple, ‘15 Scholar, got her own car and moved to her own house while balancing college, work, and a social life in 2020.
  • Chris Schlechty, ‘02 Scholar, went paragliding using a modified chair through Project Airtime in 2020.
  • Brookelyn R., ‘15 Scholar, won Reserve Grand Champion with two Dexter cattle at the Washington State Fair in 2020.
  • Daman W., ‘05 Scholar, inducted into the Susan Daniels Disability Mentoring Hall of Fame in 2019.
  • Jesse A., ‘95 Scholar, spoke at the third annual Game Accessibility Conference (GAConf) as part of a panel on video games and virtual reality accessibility for Blind and low vision users in 2019.
  • Olivia W., ‘13 Scholar, got a job as a teaching assistant at Summit Atlas High School. She will be working in a small special education classroom helping middle school and high school aged students engage in the classroom and with assignments in 2019.
  • Angela M., ‘11 Scholar, got accepted to a PhD program in clinical psychology and will be starting at Seattle Pacific University in fall of 2019.
  • Hannah W., ‘13 Scholar, won the Dean’s Medal from the University of Washington’s College of Arts & Sciences in the Natural Sciences category for her academic excellence, leadership, and service.
  • Torin P., ‘18 Scholar, won first place in their age category at the Rising Voices Oratory competition in 2019.
  • Paige D., ‘11 Scholar, moved across the country from Washington to Virginia and purchased a house in 2019.
  • Stuart O., ‘99 Scholar, spoke about his life experiences on an NPR radio program called “Sound Effect #156: Augmented Reality.” The segment was produced by Gabriel Spitzer and aired on KNKX radio April 2019.
  • Teresa B., ‘16 Scholar , was featured in The Seattle Times for her work on Seattle University’s dance team as well as her professional and academic success in 2019.
  • Jae K., ‘11 Scholar, won the Disability Rights Washington Breaking Barriers Award, which honors an advocate with a disability for breaking barriers to advance the rights of and improve the lives of people with disabilities in Washington State in 2019.
  • Anna O., ‘17 Scholar, was chosen for and completed an internship with the Center for Neurotechnology at the University of Washington during the summer of 2019.
  • Jane S., ‘17 Scholar, received the Center School Excellence Award in Chemistry in 2018.

  • Joey S., ‘09 Scholar, on the CompTIA A+ Certification 902 exam, obtained a score of 852, setting the record for highest score out of Green River College in 2018.

  • Anna O., ‘17 Scholar, was keynote speaker at a Camp Goodtimes event that raised a half million dollars in 2018.

  • Jessie Z., ‘11 Scholar, accepted into many mentorship and leadership programs, including the Leadership Institute at the Center for Women & Democracy, the AIGA Changemaker Series, the USBLN Rising Leaders Mentorship Program, and the Hexagon UX Mentorship Program in 2018.

  • Shawn L., ‘95 Scholar, awarded Advocate of the Year from the Center for Independence for work training first responders and emergency medical services (EMS) managers on best practices for communicating with people with disabilities in 2017.

  • Rochelle B., ‘16 Scholar, awarded a $2,500 scholarship from Seattle Public Schools in 2017.

He has organized disability awareness events and has spoken on numerous panels regarding inclusion, access, and transition to college and careers (2010).
