Trailblazer Awards

Last year we initiated the DO-IT Trailblazer awards to highlight DO-IT community members who have forged new pathways which will benefit others. We have selected individuals who through their work and accomplishments have changed the way the world views people with disabilities and their potential to succeed in challenging careers and activities. Congratulations to this year's honorees!

Phase I Scholars

Twenty Phase I Scholars attended their first DO-IT Summer Study session at the University of Washington in August of 2005. They learned about college life and prepared for college and careers. Throughout the year, they communicate with each other as well as DO-IT participants and DO-IT Mentors. They use the Internet to support their academic studies, and they complete projects in exciting fields that include science, engineering, mathematics, technology, and business.

Dulce, '05 Scholar

Hi, my name is Dulce. I am going to be a senior this fall. My favorite classes are math and reading, and I plan to become a computer support specialist. I'm originally from Mexico, but moved here 4 years ago and now know how to speak both Spanish and English. Soccer is my favorite sport; I used to play in Mexico. I also play basketball and last year I went to Arizona to compete and won an award from my coach. I love to listen to music, chat with friends and family, and read and write poetry. I am deaf and also have cerebral palsy, which affects my mobility.

Shavonne, '05 Scholar

My name is Shavonne. I'm 16 years old and was born with spina bifida. I'll be starting my junior year in high school. My younger sister has been a big support for me as I've struggled to be a normal teenager. I'm an active member of my community and school, and I belong to DECA as well as the Justice and Peace Club. I also volunteer to work with pets to prevent overpopulation. This year I will be my school's football team manager and I plan to earn a school letter. I dream of going to the University of Washington and becoming a podiatrist.

Jennifer, '05 Scholar

Hi, my name is Jennifer. I am 18 and have Cerebral Palsy. I am going to be a junior in high school this fall. I am involved with choir at school. I like to spend time with family and friends. I love to go shopping and hang out with my grandma. My plans are to attend a local college, get my A.A. degree, then pursue a career in the computer technology field. I am hoping my experiences with DO-IT will help me explore other options and tools that I can use to better my future.

Kayla, '05 Scholar

Hello. My name is Kayla. I'm 17 years old and will be a senior in high school in the fall. My favorite classes are English, French, and psychology. I will also be attending a Running Start program. At school I am involved with FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America). Outside of school I love to paint, read, walk my dogs, shop, and go to Sonics games. My career goal is to become a psychologist. I really want to go to the University of Washington. My disability is Central Core Disease (Muscular Dystrophy). I hope that the DO-IT program can help me become more independent.

Daren, '05 Scholar

Hi, my name is Daren and I have Dyslexia. I will be a junior in high school this fall. I also attend Community College. When I graduate I will have both my high school diploma and an Associates Degree in science. I plan to go on to a 4-year college and major in biochemistry and perhaps obtain my Ph.D. at the University of Washington. I like sports such as swimming and track. I also enjoy putting together puzzles.

Bella, '05 Scholar

Hi everyone! My name is Bella and I have Cerebral Palsy which affects most of my muscles including my eyes. So I use quad canes, a bugsy walker (only for aerobic exercise), or a wheelchair, and I need visual materials to be enlarged for me to read. I go to high school and will be in the 11th grade next year. Art, language arts, and drama are my three favorite classes, but I also like biology and math. My hobbies include babysitting, acting, reading, playing with my dogs, playing the piano and walking my dogs. I'm part of a Public Theater summer youth program. I acted in a play called "His Dark Materials" this July. My career goals are to be a teacher and an artist. I'd also like to help out in a day care because I love kids. I'm interested in going to community college.

Zachary, '05 Scholar

I'm Zach and I'm in the 11th grade. My favorite classes are math and weight lifting. I play football and wrestle for my high school. Outside of school, I like to work out and hang out with my friends. I am interested in a career as a firefighter and would like to study fire science in college. I plan to go to a community college or the University of Washington. The disability I have is Dysgraphia which means that I have trouble writing. I'm hoping that in DO-IT I can access technology that will assist me with writing.

Marlen, '05 Scholar

Hey, my name is Marlen, and I have a learning disability that affects my spelling, grammar, reading, and math. I am going to be a junior this fall. My favorite subject is science and I would like to be a biologist or a dentist. I enjoy swimming in the middle of the night and going to Mount Constitution. I also love all music (with the exception of country)!

Logan, '05 Scholar

Hi, my name is Logan. I will be a senior this fall. I can't wait to get into the real world! One of my favorite classes is weight lifting. There's just something about being in a weight room that makes me feel good as a person. As for school activities, I'm on the power lifting team for my high school. I was one of the ten power lifters who were invited to state from my school. I'm the second strongest male in the state for my weight category and the first paraplegic with Cerebral Palsy to compete. Some of my hobbies include playing my bass guitar, working out, and having a good time with friends. In college I plan to either go into the networking or the digital animation field. I hope that DO-IT can help me achieve my college and career goals by allowing me to gain experience in my fields of interest and helping me get a feel for how life will be once I have achieved those goals.

Andrew, '05 Scholar

Hi, my name is Andrew and I am going to be a junior this fall. My favorite classes are math, drama, and language arts, and I am involved in Inner City Outings (ICO), school plays, and sports as well as community service. I enjoy hanging out with my friends and playing soccer. I am interested in going to the UW and would like to study law, Spanish, and acting. I hope to be a bilingual lawyer, actor and poet someday. I started a job this summer at a specialty grocery store that I really enjoy as I am very social and like to be around all types of people. I have Tourette's Syndrome and just recently learned that I may also have Asperger's Syndrome. I hope that my experience with DO-IT will help me become more comfortable with my disabilities.

Nate, '05 Scholar

Hello, my name is Nate. I will be a senior this fall. My favorite subjects are history and language arts. I like hanging out with friends and family. My learning disability has been a challenge, however this year I took Spanish and passed it. I knew that I needed a second language to go to college. I would like to attend the University of Washington and get a degree in business and then pursue a career in real estate. What I hope to gain from the DO-IT program is more strength to help me with my learning disability.

Jesse, '05 Scholar

My name is Jesse. I'm going into the 12th grade, and my favorite class is chemistry. I used to run track and I am thinking about doing some work with the choir and the drama club. Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my friends or just hanging out at home. I am interested in pursuing a career as a forensic scientist. In college I would like to learn about genetics and maybe entomology. I am hoping to attend the University of Washington or Seattle Pacific University. My disability is Asperger's Syndrome and I feel that I don't need any academic help, although my social skills could use some improvement.

Noah, '05 Scholar

My name is Noah. I am 16 years old and go to high school. My favorite classes are social studies, world religion, government, and math. At school I am in link crew and croquet club. Last year I was also involved in student government. Outside of school I listen to a lot of music and go to concerts. I enjoy playing video games and basketball. I watch lots of sports on TV and know many sports facts and information. My disability is Cerebral Palsy. I hope DO-IT will help me get ready for college and living on my own as well as meet new people.

Hi, I'm Sakina. I am going to be a junior this fall. My favorite class is Leadership, and I like music and history. I have a learning disability that impacts my reading, writing, and spelling. I like to shop and support my high school teams; football and basketball games are my favorite because I like to socialize. I'm a pretty cool person!

My name is Kayla, and my disability is Cerebral Palsy. I currently attend high school, where I will be a junior this fall. I enjoy computers, listening to music, and watching movies. My favorite subject in school is English. My career goal is to work with computers. I'd like to attend the University of Washington.

Jessie, '05 Scholar

Hey, my name is Jessie. I'm a senior in high school. My favorite subject is math because it's challenging. I also like hanging out at lunch and socializing with my friends. I enjoy chatting online, sending email, playing games, and talking on the phone. In case you hadn't noticed already, I love to communicate and have a good sense of humor. Daman, '05 Scholar

Hi, my name is Daman and I will be a junior in secondary school this fall. I plan to go to the University of Washington and would like a career as an architect or a computer engineer when I graduate. I have Cerebral Palsy and am a webmaster for many organizations, including the United Cerebral Palsy of South Puget Sound. I have also been a keynote speaker at fundraising events and parent support groups.

Cassandra, '05 Scholar

Hi, my name is Cassie. I was born with Spina Bifida. I am 17 years old and will be a senior in high school. I am involved in a club called Multi-Cultural Student Union. I also play tennis on my school team. Outside of school, I swim and play games online. My career goal is to become a computer programmer. This year I have been on four MESA (Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement) trips because we do not have a class for juniors or seniors. I got to go to Avista, Itron, Deaconess, and out to the State Patrol Crime Lab. This year a film crew came out from ESPN to film me because I play tennis in my wheelchair on my school team. I look forward to participating in DO-IT this year.

Phase II Scholars

Phase II Scholars began participation in DO-IT in 2004 and attended their second Summer Study at the University of Washington in August of 2005. During that session, they worked closely with University faculty; in small groups, they studied the Game of Life (computer image processing), oceans and the atmosphere, accessible design of Web pages, and virtual reality. Throughout the year, they communicate via the Internet and participate in DO-IT activities, projects, and internships.

Andrew '04 Scholar

Hey guys! My name is Andrew. I'm energetic and easy to talk to. As a senior in high school last year I was extremely busy with choir and performances. I was in every theatre production my school put on, which consumed most of my time. To add to my busy schedule I was a member of Vocal Jazz, and I also squeezed in a very successful track season throwing javelin. I have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and a learning disability in reading and writing. Accommodations, like extra time on tests, have been very helpful. My favorite subjects are theatre and music. I'm going to be a freshman at a state university this fall where I intend to major in musical theatre or performance. I have aspirations to be on Broadway someday, so keep your eyes and ears open!

Laura '04 Scholar

Hey! My name is Laura and I'm eighteen years old. I graduated from high school in June and will attend a private university this fall. Because of an accident, I am legally blind in my left eye and suffer from a traumatic brain injury. In the past five years, I have faced many challenges both inside and outside of school. One thing that I am truly grateful for is how helpful and caring a lot of my teachers were. While I am at college, I plan to major in secondary education. A lot of things have influenced me to become who I am today. A few of these are God and faith, music, bunnies, sports and my community. I am glad that I was given the opportunity to be a part of the DO-IT community and look forward to getting to know all of you better!

Lukas '04 Scholar

My name is Lukas. I am a senior at the best high school there is. The full name of my disability is Amyoplasia Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita. My favorite classes were math, science, marching band, jazz band, and concert band. Now, because of my teacher, US History (probably going to be AP Government and Politics this coming year), marching band, jazz band, and wind ensemble. Outside of school, I enjoy hanging out with my friends, playing chess, playing on the computer, going to the movies, playing my instrument, and doing family things. I'm looking to minor in music and major in Communications and Finance. I hope to go to the University of Washington, Whitworth College, University of Oregon, Gonzaga University, or Harvard. My biggest accomplishment this year were all the things I did wrong. Most people wouldn't say this is their biggest accomplishment, but I feel, because of those wrong-doings, I have become a much better person both on the inside and on the outside. I've learned a lot about myself and other people, especially the people closest to me. I've developed good habits and not so good habits. I'm slowly but surely working on my long list of bad habits so I should be straightened out by the fall.

Kathleen '04 Scholar

Hi my name is Kathleen. This fall I will be a senior in high school. I am in the marching band where I play the Eb Alto saxophone, and I participate in several events in the Science Olympiad. I have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). I would like to pursue a career in biology, maybe entymology or microbiology. I am looking at the Science and Engineering Institute at Washington State University to continue my schooling when I graduate.

Hello all, my name is Carrie. I'm 18 years old and recently graduated from high school. In the fall I will attend community college and major in Musical Production. After I have completed the program, I hope to make a name for myself as a music producer.

Tracy '04 Scholar

Hi, my name is Tracy. I just graduated from high school, and plan to go to a community college for culinary arts. I have already lived on my own for over a year and a half, and it is going really well. One of my favorite hobbies is to play pool. I also enjoy hanging out with my friends and going river rafting. I have a learning disability that makes reading and spelling difficult.

Amanda '04 Scholar

Hello. My name is Amanda. I graduated from high school this spring. For the last two years I have been very involved in the world of art. I was accepted to an art college in Oregon but will first be attending a local community college this fall to take a few more art classes before I go. One of my paintings won a local high school art show and I went to Olympia, Washington, to compete in the state art show. I love to paint, read and hang out with my friends and family.

Daniel '04 Scholar

Hi. My name is Daniel. I am 17 and a senior in high school. I am a member of National Honor Society and I am an Eagle Scout. Last year I had tons of fun in my CAD class (Computer Assisted Design). Outside of school, I run cross-country, downhill ski, play ultimate Frisbee, play golf, backpack (as a Boy Scout) and build things. I hope to become a mechanical engineer. I have a reading disability and am diabetic. Through DO-IT I have learned to use new technology that can reduce the time I spend on homework.

Julie '04 Scholar

Hello to all!!! My name is Julie. I am 18 years old and just graduated from high school. My favorite classes this year were independent living, choir, math, and art. I was a member of the National Honor Society. I have three brothers and a sister; I am the oldest. I enjoy hanging out with friends, listening to music, playing on the computer, and reading. Last year I went to my first concert to see Sugar Ray and Matchbox 20. I was in the front row and Mark McGrath, the lead singer of Sugar Ray, came down and kissed me twice. Now that I have graduated from high school I plan to go to college and study to become an elementary school teacher.

Meg '04 Scholar

My name is Meg. I will be a senior this fall. I have a disability called Cerebral Palsy, which affects my balance and depth perception. This past year I enrolled in an AP US history course, which is a vigorous curriculum to keep up with. I am student of the semester in French 2nd year, which really surprised me. I am exploring bioengineering as a career.

Maryann '04 Scholar

My name is Maryann. I am 19 years old and will be a senior this fall. I want to study disability law or accounting first at a junior college. I have my driving learner's permit and, with TONS of practice, my goal is to drive independently. I am active in 4H with a dog group and my family is currently raising a black lab to be an assistance dog to help someone else like my service dog, Fisher. I enjoy river rafting, water skiing, and snow skiing. I want to do it all!

Alex '04 Scholar

My name is Alex. I'm involved with Youth Group and Scouts. One accomplishment that I'm proud of is earning my Communication Merit Badge. I successfully used my laptop to do this. Although I will enter 12th grade this year, I will take 2 years for my senior year. By doing so, I hope to not be as rushed this year as in 11th grade. I plan to go to a community college afterwards and work towards something in the field of writing. This summer, the week after DO-IT Summer Study ends, I'm off to Boy Scout camp in the North Cascades!

Makenna '04 Scholar

My name is Makenna. I attend high school. I will be a senior in the fall. Outside of school I like to hang out with my friends, listen to music, read, and annoy my tutors (just kidding). I also love to travel. I really want to go to Hawaii someday. I plan on attending community college and then a four-year university. I have Cerebral Palsy and a learning disability.

Katie '04 Scholar

Hi! My name is Katie and I am heading into my senior year. I have two great parents, a younger sister, a bunch of super friends, and three furry cats. I have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Dyslexia so it often takes me a little longer to do things and I usually ask a lot of questions. I'm on the school play stage crew, and in the National Honor Society, and in Girl Scouts. I'm an active Catholic Girls Club leader as well. During my spare moments, I attempt to collect stamps, write, sing here and there, and hang out with friends. My favorite subjects at school are art (ceramics!!!), creative writing, American Sign Language (ASL), integrated science, and physics. Along with art, music, and writing, I also love nature, reading, my Faith, laughing, and sleeping in! After high school, I plan on attending a four-year college, entering a career that definitely involves working with kids (probably an elementary teacher, maybe an art therapist!), and then going paragliding!

Ashley '04 Scholar

My name is Ashley. I graduated from high school this year and will be entering a community college in the fall. During my senior year I got numerous awards including a silver cord for graduation, an unsung hero award from the school's Parents, and a recognition award from my drama/thespian society. I was Director of Costumes and Publicity for our last show of the year! At school I was also involved in the Student Government Association and organized the blood drives, pep rallies, elections, and other SGA activities. I like to volunteer at my local animal shelter (especially caring for and feeding all the cute cats), read, surf the web, talk on the phone, shop, dance, and listen to music. I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome.

Vishal '04 Scholar

Hi, my name is Vishal. I will be a senior this fall. My accomplishments are becoming Associate Student Body president, speaking at school board meetings regarding school closures, and planning a canned food drive, two successful student dances, and a disability awareness week called "Understanding." I spoke in various classes about my disability. I also sold wristbands to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy, which I have. I like to play video games, watch TV, email, talk with people, and surf the 'Net. My career interests include being a sports journalist or broadcaster. Go Seattle sports teams!

"Bud" '04 Scholar

My name is Garrett and I go by Bud. I have been visually impaired since I was in 4th grade. I am going to be a freshman at a private university in the fall. I will be in an entrepreneurial program, and I'm considering majoring in business. My favorite classes in high school were math, physics, and Spanish. I enjoy sailing and watching baseball.

Russell '04 Scholar

My name is Russell. I have Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy and use a wheelchair. I am graduating from high school this year and will be attending a private university. I am interested in history, Spanish, and computers. In my spare time I enjoy watching baseball, drawing, reading, playing videogames, and spending time with my family.

Michael '04 Scholar

My name is Michael. I recently graduated from high school, where I was involved in percussion ensemble and Honor Society and enjoyed computer, math, science and band classes. I completed a senior project in plumbing and a job shadow at Habitat for Humanity as well as helped remodel two of the bathrooms at my house. Outside of school I am a computer/console nerd; I love video games. I also like to go fishing, to baseball games, swimming, to water parks, and camping. I really enjoy being with my family and I love playing golf. My career goal is to be an engineer involved in the use of nuclear fusion as an energy source. I plan to attend community college. After I complete an Associates degree I would like to go on to a state university and get a Ph.D. in engineering. I have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which means I have trouble sitting still and focusing on the current task at hand. I also have small motor and large motor disabilities, so I have a difficult time writing. DO-IT helps me be more independent and find creative ways to type out homework such as math and physics problems.

Blanca '04 Scholar

My name is Blanca. I'm 17 years old and will be a senior this fall. My favorite subject in school is math, and I also enjoy ceramics. I live with my parents, two brothers, and a sister. I am thinking of becoming a child psychologist because I enjoy working with children. I love to read, watch TV, and play on the computer. I was in an accident where I suffered a spinal cord injury, and I've used a wheelchair for 4 years. One of the things I enjoy about DO-IT is meeting people with similar and different disabilities who have gone on to do many creative and interesting things with their lives.

Jessica '04 Scholar

My name is Jessica. I will be a senior this fall. I enjoy being with my family, playing with my animals and babysitting. I hope to have a career in education, possibly as a kindergarten teacher.

Phase III Scholars

Phase III Scholars are completing high school or transitioning to college. Throughout the year, they communicate with other Scholars, Ambassadors, Pals, and Mentors, and participate in DO-IT activities. Some become Interns in DO-IT Summer Study and participate in other work experiences.

Patrick, '03 Scholar

My name is Patrick. I will be in the 12th grade. My hobbies include using the computer, going to church, and hanging out with my friends. I have two brothers and a sister. I have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which weakens my muscles over time. Useful accommodations are a lift, a wheelchair, and a shower chair. I enjoy taking classes in the business field, computer-aided drafting, and computer game design.

Crystal, '03 Scholar

Howdy y'all. My name is Crystal. I graduated from high school. For my senior project I job-shadowed at Wal-Mart. I thought it was cool, but I do not see myself at Wal-Mart for the rest of my life. I like to play on the computer and watch good old movies and Country Music Television. I use a wheelchair to get around, but I work hard at therapy so I can walk again.

Zachary, '03 Scholar

I am originally from Korea. My American parents, David and Karen, adopted me. I like playing computer games. I will be a senior this coming fall. Math is my favorite subject. I participated on the track team. My disability is short term memory loss and some fine motor skill loss in my hands due to an anoxic brain injury in 2002. I am very patient with any situation and am a good friend. I was an Intern at Summer Study 2005.

Jamie, '03 Scholar

Hi. My name is Jamie. I am an only child, but I have five step-sisters. My extra curricular activities are tennis, and community service. I have a learning disability in the areas of math, reading, and writing. The accommodations that have been most helpful are extra time on tests and being able to take them in another room. I can type faster than I can write; a computer helps me get my thoughts written down. DO-IT has helped me get a better understanding of what college will be like and how to succeed in that environment. I will be a state university. I am excited to major in Special Education.

Shaun, '03 Scholar

My name is Shaun. I just graduated from high school and will be a freshman at community college. I like to lift weights, wrestle, play video games, go to drag races and hang with friends. Some of my interests are conservation and wildlife, hotrods, tattoos, and body piercing.

My name is Skylor. I will be starting community college this fall. I enjoy working with people and plan to major in either Psychology or Earth Science. I was an Intern at Summer Study 2005.

Vanessa, '03 Scholar

My name is Vanessa, and I just graduated from high school. In the fall, I'll be attending a community college. My family is made up of my mom, dad, twin sister and my soon-to-be brother-in-law. I can't wait for college. It will just be my roommate and I living together, and I feel that I'm ready for the new changes that are ahead. I feel very blessed to be in the DO-IT family! It's changed my life for the better, and it's helping me make all my dreams come true! Thank you to everyone who has been a part of my DO-IT journey. I was an Intern at Summer Study 2005.

Joshua, '03 Scholar

My name is Joshua. I will be a senior in high school this fall. My family consists of my mom, dad, brother sister. The class I am most excited to be taking next year is a 2-period career- oriented class called The Teaching Academy. I enjoy baseball, swimming, wheelchair basketball, and track. I was born with Spina Bifida and use a wheelchair but I can walk with forearm crutches. I plan to attend a community college and then transfer to a 4-year college. I would like to study for a career in communications or social services/education.

My name is Matt. I hope to go to community college to study business. I am interested in the stock market and real estate land developing. Some of the career fields I would like to be involved in are engineering and video editing. I was an Intern at Summer Study 2005.

Joshua, '03 Scholar

My name is Joshua. I am interested in video game programming. This year at school I joined my school track team and achieved personal records in the three events that I participated in. I am going into my senior year of high school. I have had a ton of fun in DO-IT the last two years.

Annemarie, '03 Scholar

My name is Annemarie and I am 18 years old. I have Cerebral Palsy which limits my mobility as well as some of my small motor skills. Next year I will be attending a private university. I hope to graduate with a double major in Communications and Biology with a minor in Spanish. Then I intend to either go on to medical school or get my masters degree and go into the profession of editing and publishing. I was an Intern at Summer Study 2005.

Tressa, '03 Scholar

My name is Tressa and I'm interested in dolphin communication. My older sister, Lacey, was a '99 DO-IT Scholar. DO-IT has created a support system that makes the real world successful for me and my disability. I have specific language disabilities which affect my comprehension and processing abilities, and I have chronic headaches. I plan to major/minor in psychology and biology, and eventually study and interact with dolphins for the rest of my career.

Conrad, '03 Scholar

My name is Conrad. I am going to be a freshman at a private university this fall. I have a recently retired service dog named Yahtzee. My favorite subjects in school are biology, Spanish, and history. Some of my career interests include employment as a political analyst, defense analyst, or linguist. DO-IT Pals are high school students with disabilities who form an electronic community on the Internet. They communicate year-round with each other and with DO-IT Scholars, Ambassadors, Mentors, and staff members. They are supported in their efforts to explore and pursue postsecondary programs and career interests. The World Wide Web is their door to the information and resources they need for success.

Hi. My name is Sheryl Burgstahler and I am the Director of DO-IT. I have a husband, Dave, and a son who are both dedicated DO-IT volunteers (especially my son, who considers himself a "Phase XII Scholar"). I have a master's degree in mathematics, with a strength in computer science and a Ph.D. in higher education. I am Director of Accessible Technology Services and Outreach with in Computing & Communications and an Affiliate Associate Professor at the University of Washington. My personal and professional experiences with young people and adults with disabilities have taught me that low expectations and negative attitudes of others are the greatest barriers to success for people with disabilities. I'm Scott Bellman. I work as a Program Coordinator and Counselor for DO-IT. I help students find challenging internships and jobs throughout the year. My career path has been in psychology. I completed a Masters degree in 1996. I am currently a licensed mental health counselor in Washington state. My discipline is cognitive behavioral psychology. I enjoy my work at DO-IT, which includes career counseling, writing, planning events, coordinating projects, supervising interns, mentoring, and of course Summer Study! My interests include performance art, camping and hiking, carpentry, and travel.
