Twenty-two Phase I Scholars attended their first DO-IT Summer Study session at the University of Washington in August of 2003. They learned about college life and prepared for college and careers. Throughout the year, they communicate with each other as well as DO-IT participants and DO-IT Mentors. They use the Internet to support their academic studies, and they complete projects in exciting fields that include science, engineering, mathematics, technology, and business.
My name is Patrick. I will be in the 11th grade. My hobbies include using the computer, going to church, and hanging out with my friends. I have two brothers and a sister. I have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which weakens my muscles over time. Useful accommodations are a lift, a wheelchair, and a shower chair. I enjoy learning anatomy through dissection. I also enjoy studying computer-aided drafting and computer game design.
My name is Crystal. I go to Columbia Junior/Senior High School. I use a wheelchair to get around. I like to sit and relax, play on the computer, and watch old movies like "The Man from Snowy River." I also like to talk. I love pizza!
Hi. My name is Justin. I will be going into the 11th grade. I am involved in swimming and wheelchair basketball. I am an above-the-knee amputee and am missing a finger on my left hand. I really enjoy chemistry and math and would like to pursue a career in one or both of these subjects. The Internet has given me the opportunity to study online and access educational information.
My name is Zachary. I will be in the 11th grade. I have a mom and dad, two brothers who are 13 and 3, and one sister who is 6. This past year I participated in the science team and track team at school. I also do taekwondo. My disability is short term memory loss and some fine motor skill loss in my hands due to an anoxic brain injury in March 2002. A helpful accommodation is when people are patient in understanding my short term memory loss. I love math, geometry, star gazing, and computer games. Before my brain injury, I was on the computer a lot playing chess online. I do not use the computer like I used to because it is hard for me to remember all of the steps to access pages where I used to go. I am also relearning how to type. I hope that DO-IT will help me set career goals in math and science.
My name is Jamie. I will be a senior next fall. I am an only child. My parents are divorced and I live with both of them. My extra curricular activities are Young Life, Girl's Honor, Key Club, tennis, community service, and Link Crew. I have a learning disability in the areas of math, reading, and writing. The accommodations that have been most helpful have been extra time on tests and being able to take them in another room. Math is one of my favorite classes. I will take physics next year. I am excited to learn more about it. I would like to major in secondary special education teaching. The value of the computer is that I can type faster than I can write, which helps me get my thoughts written down. The Internet has helped because everything is a fingertip away. DO-IT will help me get a feeling for college life.
My name is Shaun. I'm from Spokane Valley, Washington. I will be a senior at West Valley High School this fall. My favorite subjects in high school are English, strength training, and science. I also enjoy wrestling, drama club, and quill and scroll. My hobbies include being a muscle car enthusiast, watching drag racing, collecting wolf memorabilia, playing video games, and listening to music.

I hope to have a career in social work or accounting. I hope DO-IT will help me find programs that help me use the computer more effectively.

My name is Tressa. I will be a senior in the fall. My parents' names are Sally and Ron. My older sister, Lacey, has Cerebral Palsy and was a DO-IT Scholar a couple of years ago. I also have a younger sister named Torie. My extracurricular activities are photography, swimming, and soccer. I have a specific language and auditory processing disability and chronic headaches. The accommodations that I have found helpful are more time on work, a reader, and a note-taker. I want to be a marine biologist that specializes in dolphin communication. The computer allows me to do my homework successfully. Access to the Internet gives me information in a way that I can use it. DO-IT will teach me how to create a support system so I can be successful. My sister Lacey encouraged me to join DO-IT because it was so successful for her.

Some of my career interests include employment as a political analyst, genetic scientist, or architect. I am a member of the National Honor Society. When I grow up, I want to do something involving animals. I love having a computer. Typing is much easier and faster than writing, plus the final product looks much better.
