2021 DO-IT Summer Study Schedule

Thanks for making Summer Study 2021 a success!

2021 is our second year of hosting Summer Study completely virtual. With all sessions held online, we are excited to learn and improve how we can offer this program in a new format. The following guidelines will help you move through the Summer Study program and gain the maximum benefit from the activities. This schedule lets you know what is planned, when to be ready and where to meet!

  • Plan ahead for rest, personal care, and other needs so you can arrive promptly and participate in all activities. If you require a schedule change, request approval from a DO-IT staff member.
  • Show your appreciation for the people who are contributing their time and talents to this program by keeping an open and respectful attitude.
  • Practice self-advocacy! If you require special disability-related accommodations in order to participate, request them from the presenter or a DO-IT staff member.
  • Complete assigned individual/group projects. Use time available during breaks and within breakout rooms to complete newsletter articles and other assignments.
  • Be sure to (1) name yourself appropriately before joining a Zoom session, (2) check Canvas before sessions for any important information, (3) check your email for surveys and forms, such as for snack boxes and, (4) look on Canvas for any extra sessions held during social hours in the evenings or on weekends.
  • On Canvas, look for the following major areas of focus for each activity:
    • Academic/College Preparation: Planning for college, securing accommodations, and exploring different fields of study.
    • Career Preparation: Exploring new and exciting career fields, and participating in work-based learning.
    • High-Tech Skills: Developing technology skills, learning about assistive technology, and designing a website.

If you have suggestions for additional activities to add to the schedule, share your ideas with any DO-IT staff member.

Summer Study 2021 - Tuesday, July 13

Tuesday, July 13, 2021 - 10:00 to 11:30

Phase 1:

Let's Impress! Presenting Yourself Online: Scholars will learn how to best present  themselves well during online meetings and courses. The session will increase the awareness of practices that Scholars can present themselves, particularly as they engage in a college class and deliver a presentation as a class assignment. Note that Scholars should watch a 10-minute online video (Get the Most From Virtual Meetings and Look Good, Too!) and think about presentation issues  before the session begins.

During this class, Scholars will address the following questions:

  • What image do you want to project to your professor? Consider audio, visual and behavioral issues.
    • How can you do that? In a student-led group discussion, how would these things be the same,  different?
    • In a social gathering with other students, how would these things be the same, different?
    • What are particular things you should always avoid?
  • What are specific things you should consider in presenting yourself - including visual, audio, behavioral, and accessibility  issues?
  • When giving a presentation to a class, how would these things be the same, different; what other things should you consider?

Tuesday, July 13, 2021 - 13:30 to 15:00

Phase 1:

Know Thyself and Others, Too! Disability Identity: A camper's favorite! DO-IT Program Coordinator Kayla Brown will share her fun presentation called Nothing About us Without US: Unpacking What We Know About Disability. Scholars will talk about what it means to be disabled, look at some key moments for the disability rights movement, and discuss common tropes for characters with disabilities in the media. Scholars will improve their ability to:

  1. Compare and contrast the medical and social models of disability.
  2. Examine the history of disability and the disability rights movement in The United States and how this has impacted perceptions of disability.
  3. Identify common tropes in the media that negatively portrays disability.

FIXED Viewing and Lunch Bunch: During this session, Scholars will share their thoughts about this complex topic and think about some of the ethical implications inherent in new technology. Together online, Scholars will watch the critically-acclaimed movie FIXED: The Science/Fiction of Human Enhancement. Then they'll have to opportunity to discuss their initial thoughts over a shared zoom lunch bunch.

    Wednesday, July 14, 2021 - 12:00 to 13:00

Lunch Open Hours: Stop by Zoom Lunch Open Hours if you have any questions or need tech support.

    Wednesday, July 14, 2021 - 13:30 to 15:00

    Phase 1:

Discussion of FIXED: After lunch, Scholar groups will assemble in Zoom breakout rooms to answer questions about topics presented in the film.

    1. Human beings are an incredibly varied bunch. So what does it mean to be “normal?” Why do you think definitions of “normal” vary so greatly?
    2. If you could change one thing about your body or your abilities, what would you change?
    3. From botox to bionic limbs, the human body is more “upgradeable” than ever. But how much of it can we alter and still be human? What do we gain or lose in the process?
    4. If new technologies can enhance human capabilities to make them smarter, faster, etc- how do you think that would change the conversation about being “able-bodied” or “normal” or “disabled?”

    Phase 1:

Watch a Movie: Join DO-IT Staff in watching a movie! Choices will be sent out beforehand so we can choose something we all want to watch together.
