Welcome to DO‑IT Snapshots 2021!
The world suddenly changed when the pandemic changed how we all lived our lives early last year. In a flash, new normals included social distancing, hand sanitizers, and face masks. At DO-IT, we mourned the loss of our planned Summer Study program for DO-IT Scholars on the UW campus, but wasted no time in figuring out how to deliver engaging activities without meeting in person. Laptops were delivered to homes, setup and tech support were provided remotely, participants and staff met via Zoom, activities, discussions, and social events occurred online, and, by the last day, staff and interns were exhausted as usual. Some things were lost, much was gained, but all Scholars took key steps in preparing for college and careers, expanding their network while using technology as an empowering tool, and networking. That is what DO-IT is all about!
This publication facilitates communication among DO‑IT Scholars, Pals, and Mentors. DO‑IT Scholars are high school students with disabilities who are preparing for college and careers. They have interests in challenging fields that include science, mathematics, engineering, and technology. They attend our Summer Study program at UW, participate in internships and leadership activities, and take part in an e-community year-round. Additional high school students with disabilities, DO‑IT Pals, join this e-community. When Scholars move on to college, they become DO‑IT Ambassadors, sharing their experiences with younger students. This e-community is also supported by DO‑IT Mentors, most of whom have disabilities themselves and are pursuing challenging postsecondary studies and careers.

These and other investors, listed in the DO‑IT Funding section of this publication, sponsor the many activities that DO‑IT undertakes. We appreciate their generous support. DO‑IT has received many awards, including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. DO-IT was recently inducted into the Susan M. Daniels Disability Mentoring Hall of Fame. We have also received the National Information Infrastructure Award, the Golden Apple Award, the Association for Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) Exceptional Program Award, the Trace Research and Development Center’s Catalyst Award, the University of Washington College of Engineering Team Innovator Award, the Career Opportunities for Students with Disabilities (COSD) Robert S. Greenberg Innovation Award, and the AHEAD Professional Recognition Award. These awards document the achievements of the DO‑IT participants. Together, these young people are changing the world, making it a more welcoming and accessible place for all of us.

Emily Boeschoten, 2015 Scholar and Ambassador, participated in the National Science Foundation’s Young Scholars Program over summer 2016 at the UW Center for Neurotechnology (CNT), where she began working with Center co-director Chet Moritz. Over summers 2018 and 2019, she did undergraduate research with Chet at the Restorative Technologies Laboratory. Chet shared that over these past five years, Emily has enthusiastically shared her rich personal experiences with our doctor of physical therapy students for the past 5 years. Her important messaging, delivered with a robust sense of humor about her challenging diagnosis, has inspired future health care providers to put the patient at the center of all clinical decision-making. She has also engaged deeply in research projects, empathizing with participants and broadening her colleagues understanding of how disability can inspire leadership in powerful ways.
To expand her horizons, Emily joined the University of Oregon Business School’s management consulting group in January 2019. In June 2020, she graduated from the University of Oregon with a bachelor of science in sociology with departmental honors, Phi Beta Kappa. She was offered the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship in Sociology for 2021, but declined due to pandemic-related reasons. She participates in the Disability:IN NextGen program and has recently returned to working in the UW Center for Neurotechnology lab.
Maya Cakmak, a DO-IT collaborator on our work in AccessEngineering, has worked to introduce students with disabilities to robotics. Maya is an associate professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering at the UW where she directs the Human-Centered Robotics Lab. Her research interests are in human-robot interaction, end-user programming, and assistive robotics. She aims to develop robots that can be programmed and controlled by a diverse group of users with unique needs and preferences to do useful tasks. Over multiple summers, Maya has hosted week-long workshops related to robotics for DO-IT’s Summer Study program. She has also hosted AccessComputing students learning about research in computer science.
Meenakshi Das is a recent graduate of Auburn University who studied computer science. She has been an active member of our AccessComputing program for the last five years, coordinating panels featuring students with disabilities at conferences, participating in conversations on our mailing list, and attending a capacity building institute. In 2017, Meenakshi, along with AccessComputing partner, Dr. Sarah Lee, were awarded a minigrant to facilitate a one-day workshop for students who are visually impaired. Meenakshi has engaged in many activities that benefit the disability community, such as running a Facebook support group for working professionals with disabilities, Working With Disabilities. This group provides a space to discuss ableism, accessibility, and share useful resources with each other.
Grady Thompson, 2015 DO-IT Scholar and Ambassador and former accessibility student assistant for Accessible Technology Services and DO-IT, recently graduated from the University of Washington (UW) with a degree in informatics and a minor in disabilities studies. After graduation, Grady joined DocuSign where he works on digital accessibility in the engineering department. While Grady was at the UW, he interned at Intel in their accessibility office, where he contributed updates to their internal website and helped develop new processes to make Intel’s workplace and products more accessible. As a universal design consultant for the Associated Students of the University of Washington (ASUW) Student Disability Commission, he worked on projects to improve the accessibility of UW’s student government, programs, and activities, including serving on a task force that ultimately led to the creation of a new office of inclusive design within ASUW. Grady has been a student staff member supporting Summer Study for the past two years. Grady also participated in the Disability:IN NextGen Leaders Program where he met his mentor at Intel who mentored him through his internship at Intel.

Hello, my name is Alexander I prefer to be called Alex. I used to attend the Pacific Learning Center. My favorite academic subjects are math, science, and history. I hope to pursue the field of astronautical engineering to hopefully work for NASA. I have autism and anxiety. My favorite activity or hobby is playing video games on my computer. I play a wide variety of video games, but I like strategy games and sandbox games in particular. Some of the games I like the most are Europa Universalis 4, Half-Life 2, and Terraria.

Salutations, all you fantastic people! My name is Sarafina. I will be entering my junior year this fall at the Anacortes High School, where I enjoy studying geography and anything related to STEM. After I graduate from high school, I want to spend my first two years of my adult life taking general classes at the Skagit Valley College. Then, by the time I turn twenty-one, I am currently thinking about moving to Los Angeles so that I can receive a major in STEM education at either Loyola Marymount University or the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Moreover, I am an extrovert who always has a major sense of adventure in life, so I usually feel ecstatic when I receive an opportunity to venture into the world, talk to lots of people, and be at the center of attention. I feel like Los Angeles is one of the closest places to my current home where I can do all of those outgoing activities all the time as well as live my dream of becoming a famous singer under the name of Venturyna. I have a lot of hobbies related to music, including learning music theory, singing, attending choir-related events, dancing, and playing the piano. Some of my other major hobbies are learning alphabets in many different languages and spending time with my friends and family. Hi everyone, my name is Sophia and I am a rising senior at Newport High School interested in pursuing computer science at the University of Washington, focusing on data science and accessibility. Since I have moderate hearing loss, I am passionate about developing wearable technology for people with disabilities, and hope to improve the user experience for people who wear hearing aids. Some of my hobbies are acting movie scenes, running, and constructing arts and crafts.
Hi everyone! My name is Theorius, my pronouns are thee/thim/ thers, and I attend the Washington State School for the Blind. My favorite school subjects are theatre and English. Some of my hobbies are reading, writing, music, and Dungeons and Dragons. After high school, I plan on attending Western Washington University to get an English degree with a focus in creative writing. My long-term plans include becoming a professor and an author. I am autistic and have retinitis pigmentosa.
Hello, I’m Warren and I go to TAF@Saghalie, where I enjoy classes in math and art. I plan on getting a bachelor’s or master’s degree and then go on to become a graphic novelist. My hobbies are drawing, playing video games, watching movies, and spending time with family.
Nineteen Phase II Scholars began participating in DO-IT in 2020. Most completed their second Summer Study at the University of Washington in July 2021. During their first year, they created lasting friendships, learned skills in technology and science, and shared fun moments with their peers and mentors. During their second session, they continued to develop self-determination and self- advocacy skills and prepare for college and careers. They worked closely with professionals and university faculty in STEM fields and learned in depth about video production. They continue to grow in their use of technology, complete projects in exciting fields, and they continue to connect with each other, DO-IT participants, and DO-IT Mentors throughout the year. After completing Summer Study 2021, these participants graduated to Phase III and Ambassadors.

I enjoy taking science and history classes at Mountlake Terrace High School and intend to go to college to get a master’s degree in biology and possibly chemistry, eventually practicing either medicine or biochemistry. I also enjoy nature and animals and am part of the Eco Club. I have spinal muscular atrophy.

I have autism, and I am interested in STEM fields. After high school, I want to attend the University of Washington and get a job in technology.

I was on the junior varsity (JV) swim team, was manager for the JV fastpitch softball team, and have been involved in 4H. I’m currently training my new Sussex Spaniel puppy.

I like to play power soccer with Seattle Adaptive Sports and look forward to playing after COVID restrictions are lifted. I enjoy watching basketball and football; my favorite teams are the Golden State Warriors and the Seattle Seahawks. My friends and I play Xbox together. When I go to college I want to study computers.

Hello, my name is Matthew, and I graduated from Raisbeck Aviation in the spring of 2021. I was accepted to Gonzaga University, Washington State University, and Arizona State University (ASU). I decided to attend Arizona State University to pursue a degree in public service and public policy with minors in sociology and parks and recreation. I am the first student from Washington to earn a spot on the ASU Leadership Scholarship Program. I have also been accepted to the ASU Cloud Scholar Program and the ASU Next Generation Leadership Program. Therefore, I have secured a full ride
scholarship based on my volunteer work during high school. I look forward to the next step on my academic journey with ASU and appreciate all the tech support I have received from the DO-IT Scholars program to make this possible.
Hi, my name is Michael, and I attend West Seattle High School. I plan to take a thirteenth year before college, and currently I’m starting my second Running Start course, Spanish, at North Seattle College. My favorite subjects are auto tech and ceramics; I love both because they are both very hands on-auto tech also allows me to engage with cars and repair, while ceramics lets me play with design and making art. I also hope to study auto engineering with clean, green energy. I am on the autism spectrum and have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which affects my executive functioning and attention.
My name is Miles. I enjoy taking journalism and statistics classes, and I graduated from Inglemoor High School and will attend the University of Washington Bothell this fall. I would like to attend the University of Washington to study history, statistics, and journalism. I am passionate about sports and would like to do sports journalism. Hello, my name is Raelynn Baranowski. This past year, through the Robinson Center Early Entrance Program, I started attending the University of Washington. I have dysgraphia, autism, and a handful of other learning disabilities. I enjoy conversations about anything STEM related. I plan to get a degree in bioengineering. I am transgender, and my prefered pronouns are she and her.
Hello! My name is Zayn, and I am deaf and wear bilateral cochlear implants. I attend Running Start. I love studying math and science and solving problems algebraically. In the future I plan to become an audiologist. I can’t wait for all the opportunities to help others!
Phase III Scholars are completing high school or transitioning to college. Some become Interns at DO-IT Summer Study and participate in other work experiences. Phase III Scholars have attended multiple Summer Studies and shared in many classes, events, and activities. Once 2021 Summer Study was over, Phase III Scholars who graduated from high school became DO-IT Ambassadors. DO-IT Ambassadors are pursuing competitive postsecondary studies and challenging careers. They share their experiences with DO-IT Scholars and Pals, encouraging them to pursue their goals in college and employment.
Hello, I’m Aidan. I enjoy my classes at Sammamish High School, particularly in English and history. I love to read and write. I participated in both the journalism and debate clubs. For higher education, I’d like to focus on science, English, and history at a school like the University of Washington or Whitman College. I plan on earning a master’s degree in journalism. I like to travel and have been to Africa twice and visited Russia for the World Cup. My dream job is to own a bookstore or cafe and live upstairs with cats.
Hi, my name is Alexis! I enjoyed my classes in math and art at Mossyrock High School, but my main passion is drawing. I will be attending DigiPen to pursue a bachelor’s degree in digital art and animation. My goal is to be an animator. I hope to have my own cartoon series online. I also played trombone in my school’s pep band, and participated in Knowledge Bowl. I enjoy video games, Doctor Who, and anime. I love musicals; my favorites are Little Shop of Horrors and Be More Chill. I have autism.
Hello, my name is Alison, and I am biracial. I’ve got an auditory processing disorder (APD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). I am attending Green River College and considering a career in human resources or journalism. I love writing and have written some short stories. I have joined several clubs at my college and am also active in my church; I am excited for the pandemic to end and the ability to engage more outside of my house. I love taking walks, learning, and reading. My favorite book genres are realistic fiction and historical fiction, although I do like nonfiction, fantasy, and self-help books, too. I returned as an Ambassador during Summer Study 2021.
My name is Carlin; I attend the Science and Math Institute (SAMI) where my favorite classes are chemistry and guitar. I live in Tacoma. I am working on my Eagle rank in Boy Scouts of America. I would like to either become a park ranger or learn more about biomechanics in college.

I have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism. I volunteer at my local pet shelter to help animals in need. I am interested in the environment and everything else on our planet.
Hi, my name is Ellie. I recently graduated from Skyline High School as a Running Start student and will attend Case Western Reserve University this year pursuing a degree in biomedical engineering. I enjoy learning about all things medical, knitting, and hanging out with my adorable dog, Ollie. I am also a huge Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings fan, and I love to play Settlers of Catan. I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, post traumatic stress disorder, and a sleep disorder. I returned as an Ambassador during Summer Study 2021.
Hi, I’m Grant. I am an autistic augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) user from Bellevue, WA. I am dual-enrolled in Bellevue High School and Bellevue College. I am really enjoying my psychology and sociology classes. Disability advocacy work for non-speakers is a passion of mine. I have been a national TASH Communication Access Workgroup member for four years, and now I am an advisory board member for CommunicationFirst. I’m currently co-designing a course for communication classroom support considerations with New York University. This summer I will attend the Autistic Self Advocacy Network’s Autism Campus Inclusion (ACI) Leadership Academy
Hi, I’m Jacob! I want to focus my engineering and design passions on improving the design of transit systems and adaptive products. I attend Cleveland STEM High School in Seattle. I have Duchenne muscular dystrophy and Asperger syndrome. I have served as the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s local Goodwill Ambassador, making public appearances, raising funds, and giving media interviews. I am also a professional DJ and like cats. I returned as an Ambassador during Summer Study 2021.
Hello, my name is Kayla! I am most interested in English and life sciences such as biology, earth and space science, anatomy and physiology, and neuroscience. I have a variety of potential career interests from neuroscience to real estate to education. Some of my favorite things are kittens, music, singing, and fuzzy blankets. I have low vision and oculocutaneous albinism. I am currently enrolled at Brigham Young University in Idaho, and have completed credit classes at the University of Washington, Eastern Washington University, and Bellevue College.
Hi, I’m Kelvin. I am currently attending Wenatchee Valley College. My goal is to transfer to Central Washington University to major in sports management to become a soccer coach. I’m also a huge World Cup fan and have helped as an honorary assistant coach for the high school soccer team for two years. I have Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Hi, my name is Merritt. I have autism. I graduated from Friday Harbor High School in the beautiful San Juan Islands. I am now attending Central Washington University. I hope to pursue a degree in the natural sciences such as archaeology to educate people about flora, fauna, animals, and history in a national park setting. I am an avid reader, love music, and play both the piano and alto saxophone. I love being outdoors and spending time with my family. I returned as an Ambassador during Summer Study 2021.
Hi, my name is Norma! I attend the Lummi Nation School in Bellingham. I enjoy playing video games, history, drawing, and music. I play the clarinet. I have a learning disability. I hope to begin Running Start next year and then pursue a career in the geosciences or biological sciences.

My name is Sheryl Burgstahler, and I am the founder and director of the DO‑IT and Access Technology Centers at the University of Washington (UW). I am also an affiliate professor in the College of Education. I have a master’s degree in mathematics and a PhD in policy, governance, and administration of higher education. DO-IT allows me to apply my personal, academic, and professional interests and experiences. I have a husband, Dave, and a son, Travis, who are both dedicated DO‑IT volunteers and UW Huskies. Dave is a professor of accounting, Travis is a manager at Amazon, and his wife Ashley is a manager within the risk assurance unit at PricewaterhouseCoopers. The ‘93 Scholars may remember Travis hanging around DO-IT Summer Study when he was three years old. DO-IT has been around a long time!
I’m Anna Marie Golden, an IT accessibility specialist at the University of Washington. I provide support and outreach to our campus web community to help them make their websites more accessible to students, faculty, staff, and visitors with disabilities. I’m a proud Husky graduate with a master’s in human-computer interaction + design, and I also hold undergraduate degrees in communications/broadcasting and information systems. I am passionate about the web and making it accessible to people of all abilities and was awarded the DO-IT 2013 Trailblazer award for my work to increase accessibility on the internet. I believe one person can change the world and that independence and inspiration can be fostered through good design.
My name is Brianna Blaser, and I am a counselor/coordinator at the DO-IT Center. Originally from the East Coast, I moved to Seattle to attend graduate school at the University of Washington, where I earned my PhD studying women in science. I enjoy spending time with my kids, Evelyn and Asher.
I manage the University of Washington’s Access Technology Center. We work directly with students, faculty, and staff with disabilities who need to access computing resources, and we also help web and application developers make exciting and accessible online resources. I’ve been working with DO-IT since it began.
My name is Elizabeth Woolner, and I am the publications coordinator and program operations specialist for DO-IT. My main role is to organize, create, and manage all of our web content, publications, and other products. I have a BA in English and a certificate in editing, both from the University of Washington. I enjoy gaming, dancing, and listening to audiobooks in my free time.
My name is Gaby de Jongh, and I am a document accessibility specialist with the University of Washington. I help educate and support faculty and staff with creating accessible electronic documents, and I also supervise student assistants working on the UW-IT PDF Remediation Project. I support DO-IT Summer Study as an instructor for the Introduction to Web Design course and facilitate the accessible technology demonstrations.
My name is Hadi Rangin, and I am an information technology accessibility specialist at the Accessibility Technology and DO-IT Centers. I identify accessibility issues on campus and promote universally designed software. I have a master’s degree in computer science.
Hello! My name is Kayla Brown. I was an ‘05 Scholar and am a counselor/coordinator at DO‑IT. I have a master of social work degree from the University of Washington. My previous studies have included community psychology and disability studies. My passions are community outreach, community-based participatory research, and disability activism. At DO-IT, I work one-on-one with students to tackle goal setting, academic planning, and building a support system. My hobbies include reading, watching the Food Network, crafting, and playing board games.

Hi, my name is Myrella (me-ray-ya) Gonzalez. I am a University of Washington Alumna (2019), and I am from North Central Washington. Currently, I am in Seattle University’s Student Development Administration program, M.Ed. track. To complete my hours of internship for my master’s program, I am working as the Summer Youth Project Coordinator at DO-IT. Through this opportunity, I am working with the DO-IT team to plan, organize, and facilitate this year’s summer programs. I am passionate about summer programs and college access for students from underrepresented backgrounds, so working at DO-IT this summer is a great opportunity for me.
I’m Scott Bellman, DO-IT program manager. I just started my 20th year at DO-IT. My work at DO-IT includes oversight of projects and programs, career counseling, writing, planning events, supervising others, mentoring, and of course Summer Study! I have served on the Washington State Governor’s Committee on Disability Issues and Employment for many years and enjoy writing papers and articles about DO-IT’s activities. Outside of work, my interests include guitar, camping, hiking, panning for gold, carpentry, and travel. I completed a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling and an undergraduate degree in psychology and business. I’m a licensed mental health counselor in Washington State.
My name is Susie Hawkey, and I am the operations manager for Accessible Technology Services. My main role is to oversee all operations within the offices, which includes submitting grants, managing budgets, and running human resources. I have a BS in biology from Seattle University and a BS in accounting from Central Washington University. When I am not working, I am usually with my nieces and nephews or travelling.
Hi! My name is Tami Tidwell. I am a counselor/coordinator for DO‑IT. Throughout the year, I enjoy working with high school and college students on topics like college admissions, scholarships, internships, employment, accommodations, and disclosure strategies. Being able to build long and lasting relationships is one of the best parts of working at DO-IT. Outside of work, I read a lot of audiobooks and ebooks, enjoy creating with friends, eating things from the garden, and playing with my cats and pup. I have dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and celiac. I am also hard of hearing. I have a degree in psychology from Texas Christian University. I was born and raised in Cowtown (a.k.a. Ft. Worth, TX).
My name is Terrill Thompson. I am the manager of the IT Accessibility Team (ITAT) at the University of Washington. ITAT works across the university technology to help ensure the technologies we’re using—including websites, documents, videos, and software—are accessibility to students, employees, and visitors with disabilities. Part of my position is funded by DO‑IT. One of my DO-IT functions is to teach the Intro to Web Design class. I live in Bellingham and do most of my work remotely. When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time in the mountains, making music, and cooking.
