Salutations, all you fantastic people! My name is Sarafina. I will be entering my junior year this fall at the Anacortes High School, where I enjoy studying geography and anything related to STEM. After I graduate from high school, I want to spend my first two years of my adult life taking general classes at the Skagit Valley College. Then, by the time I turn twenty-one, I am currently thinking about moving to Los Angeles so that I can receive a major in STEM education at either Loyola Marymount University or the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Moreover, I am an extrovert who always has a major sense of adventure in life, so I usually feel ecstatic when I receive an opportunity to venture into the world, talk to lots of people, and be at the center of attention. I feel like Los Angeles is one of the closest places to my current home where I can do all of those outgoing activities all the time as well as live my dream of becoming a famous singer under the name of Venturyna. Hello, my name is Iris. I’m a senior at Quincy High School. I have a vision disability called nystagmus, which I’ve had since I was born. I enjoy math, art, and especially science and human anatomy. After finishing at His Hill, my plan is to be part of the electrician apprenticeship program at Skagit Valley College. For three years I lived in Sumatra, Indonesia, where my parents were teachers. Spending time in other parts of the world has given me an appreciation for pursuing adventures, exploring new things, and interacting with different cultures and people. Over summers 2018 and 2019, I did undergraduate research in the Restorative Technologies Laboratory. To try something new, I joined the University of Oregon Business School’s management consulting group in January 2019. In 2021, took on leadership roles for the Disabled Students and Allies Club (DSAAC) and Crimson Scrubs (nursing student organization). Both organizations focus on promoting awareness, inclusively, and accessibility. Volunteers at vaccine clinics. Involved in the language access team of HEC (Health Education Center) from Spokane, which focuses on alleviating language barriers in healthcare for non-English speaking individuals. A WWAMI AHEC (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho Area Health Education Center) Scholar, which is a program dedicated to volunteering in rural and under served communities. Works three days a week at the Midwest Food Bank. Attended the drive-thru Tim Tebow Night to Shine, volunteers at the Angel Tree for Salvation Army, and attends a day program two days a week. Loves dancing, music, Zumba, and traveling.

Earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Dakota. Lives in Norfolk, Virginia. Is a homemaker and enjoys hosting other people. Has received first guide dog.

Dyslexia

Works as a personal trainer and running coach. Travels around the world competing in half marathon, 10k, and 5k races. Completed first full marathon in 2018. Lives with husband and dog, Tilly, in Snohomish, Washington.

Ischemic spinal cord injury

Earned a master’s degree and a doctoral degree in micro electronics and photonics from the University of Arkansas. Recipient of the Walton Distinguished Doctoral Fellowship. Currently works at the Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center as a research physicist doing computer modeling. Horseback rides in her free time.

Earned a bachelor’s of accountancy degree from Mississippi State University and a master of business administration degree from Belhaven University. Works as an accountant for the North East MS Electric Power Association.

Severe hearing loss

Earned a master of business administration degree from University of New Haven and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Connecticut. Works as a manager for Citco in San Francisco.

Larsen syndrome

Earned a bachelor’s degree in economic finances and information technology management and a master’s degree in city and regional planning from the University of California, Berkeley. Working as an ADA programs division manager for the City of Oakland, CA.

Hearing impairment

Graduated magna cum laude with a degree in graphic communications and emphasis in multimedia from Minnesota State University, Moorhead. Working at Daktronics as a web/ system administrator for 14 years. Married and is blessed to be the father to two adopted twins. Enjoys spending time outdoors, biking,
fishing and taking pictures of nature even storms too! Here’s to another year!

Attended the University of Washington with an interest in technical communication. Died in the spring of 2012.

Cerebral palsy

Worked as a web accessibility specialist, disability advocate, and personal care assistant. Received the Presidential Volunteer Services Award in 2010 and a DO-IT Trailblazer award in 2011.

Quadriplegia

Earned a bachelor’s degree in social services at Central Washington University and a web design certificate from the Art Institute. Works as an executive director of the self-advocacy organization Allies in Advocacy, an organization fighting for the civil and equal rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Member of Self Advocates in Leadership, PAS-Port 4 Change, and the University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Consumer Advisory Council, and a co-chair of the Community Advocacy Coalition.

Cerebral palsy, learning disabilities

Works in the technical service department for the Prentke Romich Company as a remote troubleshooter in technical support. Also involved with Blue Sky Designs in Minneapolis working on various communication devices and tablets that can be mounted onto wheelchairs. Assisted in writing the book, Transition Strategies for Adolescents and Young Adults Who Use Augmentative and Alternative Communication by David McNaughton and David Beukelman. Received a DO-IT Trailblazer award in 2007.
