University of Washington part of nationwide study for finding autism biomarkers

University of Washington (UW) researchers have become part of a nationwide study to find a better way of diagnosing autism by identifying biological markers that could help doctors diagnose and assess treatments sooner and easier. UW associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences Raphael Bernier is the clinical director of the Seattle Children's Autism Center, and an investigator in this new study.

Autism can often reveal signs and symptoms within the first two years of life, with symptoms varying from repetative behaviors to difficulties with communication and social interaction. Diagnosis and treatment can both be very lengthy processes; this study, lead by the National institute of Health, hopes to make them shorter and faster.
