Suggestions from Practitioners
Participants in Capacity-Building Institutes (CBIs) hosted by DO-IT projects include experts with respect to their knowledge in diverse fields that include: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), instruction, transition, students with disabilities, program management, infrastructure development, policies and practices, and disability-related services. In small group discussions participants were asked to suggest specific things project staff and partners could do to increase the success of students with disabilities in college, graduate school, and careers in challenging fields such as STEM degrees. Their recommendations are published in the CBI proceedings. The usefulness of the output of the CBIs is demonstrated by the great number of the participant ideas that have been implemented in DO-IT projects and programs. For example, the following CBI outcomes have specifically guided AccessSTEM and AccessComputing projects.
